The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has confirmed that a fire broke out at Sasani Studios, the set of SABC 1’s popular drama Skeem Saam, resulting in two crew members being injured.
In a statement, the SABC said, “The SABC confirms that a fire occurred at Sasani Studios on the set of SABC 1’s flagship drama, Skeem Saam, resulting in two crew members being injured and hospitalised. Our thoughts are with the injured crew members, and we wish them a speedy recovery.”
The fire caused damage to the set and equipment, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The SABC added, “The fire caused some damage to the set and equipment, the full extent thereof is being assessed. To this end, the SABC is working closely with Peu Communication Solutions and Sasani Studios to evaluate the situation.”
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols on set. Fans of the award-winning drama have taken to social media to express their support for the injured crew members.
Skeem Saam, which has been a staple of South African television for over a decade, is known for its compelling storytelling and relatable characters.
The show’s production team has not yet announced how the fire will affect upcoming episodes.
