South African musician Thandiswa Mazwai is mourning the passing of iconic percussionist Thabang Tabane, who was a member of her team.
Tabane who was born into a musical family and followed in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Philip Tabane, a famed member of Malombo music.
Thabang’s music career extended decades and he worked with many well-known musicians and ensembles both locally and internationally.
His performances were distinguished by his upbeat stage presence and command of various percussion instruments, including the djembe, congas and traditional African drums.
Taking to social media, Thandiswa Mazwai announced the loss of Thabang Tabane, and how she is struggling to comprehend his passing;
“I am devastated to share the heartbreaking news that our beloved percussionist Thabang Tabane has passed away earlier today. This is an unimaginable loss, and we are all struggling to process it.
“Thabang was not only an incredible musician, but also a dear friend, a source of inspiration, and a vital part of our music as a band. His presence, energy, and spirit will be deeply missed, both on and off the stage. He leaves behind his children. And the Malombo drums lay silent,” wrote Mazwai
