An elephant charged and stomped a 59-year-old tourist near the Malelane Gate in Mpumalanga’s Kruger National Park, resulting in his death.
The circumstances surrounding the tragedy are still being looked into, according to South African National Parks (SANParks). The unfortunate incident reportedly happened when a tourist got out of their car and was attacked by an elephant.
Due to the delicate nature of the images and videos, SANParks is urging witnesses to the incident to refrain from posting them on social media.
“Today a tragic accident occurred when a tourist was charged and trampled by an elephant near Crocodile River at Malelane Gate. This, regrettably, resulted in loss of life.
“South African National Parks (SANParks) officials are at the scene to attend to the matter and support the family. Due to the sensitivity of the incident, we appeal to the public to refrain from posting or sharing pictures and videos of the incident on social media. Additional details will be released in due course.
SANParks Board and Management extends their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased for the loss of their loved one,” said SANParks in a statement.
In another related incident in 2024, six elephants escaped from South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park.
