Over 40 Putco buses have been burnt at four depots in Mpumalanga.
According to the Public Utility Transport Corporation (PUTCO), attacks at several Mpumalanga depots resulted in the burning of 47 of its buses and the injuries of two employees.
PUTCO reports that the incident happened on Monday evening.
“Initial reports indicate that on Monday evening, 27 January 2025, an unknown group of assailants ambushed and bound security at the Moloto depot before setting buses alight and opening fire inside the depot. The violent attack resulted in two employees being injured – one was shot in the leg, and another was struck on the head with a chair.
The rampage spread throughout the night, with additional depots reporting buses set on fire. In total, approximately 47 buses were burned across the following affected depots:

· Wolwekraal
· Siyabushwa
· Vaalbank” read the statement from PUTCO
PUTCO further said under stricter oversight, Putco’s buses are still running in the impacted areas despite the damage. They also said that they are actively participating in the ongoing investigations with law enforcement.
Videos of the burning buses have been widely shared on social media.
