American rapper Sexyy Red has apologised to Dr Martin Luther King Jr.’s family after sharing a post that Dr King’s daughter, Bernice King, described as disrespectful.
The controversy arose on Monday during the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Sexyy Red, 26, marked the occasion by posting an AI-generated image on X (formerly Twitter) showing herself and Dr King holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes.
“This is intentionally distasteful, dishonouring, deplorable, and disrespectful to my family and my father,” Bernice King responded.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the United States observed on the third Monday of January, honours the life and legacy of Dr King. He was a pivotal figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, advocating for equality through nonviolent civil disobedience.
Sexyy Red has since apologised, expressing regret for the offence caused and acknowledging the need for sensitivity in honouring Dr King’s legacy.
The incident sparked mixed reactions online, prompting the Siz The World podcast team to discuss whether Bernice King was justified in taking offence.
Dr Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and social activist, led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. He is best remembered for his efforts in advancing civil rights, including organising the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
