The funerals of Afropop singer Winnie Khumalo and Kwaito legend Victor “Doc Shebeleza” Bogopane were held in two separate services in Johannesburg on Saturday, 18 January.
This follows the passing of Winnie Khumalo on her way to the hospital after suffering a short illness on Tuesday, 7 January.
While Doc Shebeleza who had been sick with jaundice since last year, died at his home on Thursday, 9 January 2025.
The musicians were both 51 years old.
Doc Shebeleza’s funeral was held at the Old Apostolic Church in Fairlands and he was buried at West Park Cemetery, Heroes Acres.
Some of the notable guest in attendance included Gauteng MEC for Education and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, poet Mzwakhe Mbuli and Minister of Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie.
Mbuli criticised the government for failing to recognise artists when they are still alive.
“Where is Doc Shebeleza today? You have politicians that will come with beautiful speeches here. In South Africa you have value when you are dead. You are contemptuously teetered when you are alive. When you are dead then you have value. They will wear beautiful suits and beautiful speeches,” Mbuli said.
Meanwhile, the likes of Joburg Mayor Dada Morero, DJ Zinhle and veteran producer Chicco Twala attended Winnie Khumalo’s funeral at the Protea Multipurpose Hall in Soweto.
Minister Gayton McKenzie also made an appearance.
Twala reprimanded the government for disappointing him by not fighting for artists.
He called out music corporations for hogging profits and stealing from artists and promised that his organisation will pay off Khumalo’s bond.
“There are three companies: Universal Music, Warner Brothers, as well as Sony. They have collected more than R1 billion. Money that belongs to musicians like Winnie, producers like Sizwe Zakwe, the late Hugh Masekela. That money, they shared it among themselves and did not pay a cent to producers,” said Twala.
Singer Rethabile Khumalo paid an emotional tribute to her mother in song.
