Deciding what to do after high school is one of the most important choices young people face. While some opt to dive straight into university, others consider taking a gap year to explore new opportunities, travel, or gain work experience.
A gap year can offer valuable life skills and perspectives, but it also comes with its own set of challenges.
Following the release of the 2024 matric results, the Siz The World team discussed the advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year after matriculating.
Sizwe shared that he wouldn’t take a gap year, as he always knew what he wanted to do.
In contrast, Sol Phenduka argued in favour of the idea, recalling advice from a high school teacher: “The best students in university aren’t necessarily those with top marks, but those who know themselves and aren’t just following parental pressure.” He added, “If you have the resources, explore the world—it’s huge. Find yourself.”
