Early this month, Nick Cannon disclosed that he had received a clinical diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). He is now talking about how he is adjusting to life with the condition.
Initially, the father of twelve talked about his diagnosis in an episode of his podcast, Counsel Culture.
He informed psychologist Cheyenne Bryant in the November 8 premiere that he had received a clinical diagnosis of the illness.
“It’s a spectrum and I think even it starts off with confidence, over-confidence, arrogance and that’s when you step into the space of narcissism. And in that there’s markers.” said
Cannon’s diagnosis has sparked discussion about mental health and the importance of seeking help.
He has been praised for his openness in discussing his struggles and for using his platform to raise awareness about mental health issue
Speaking with People on Wednesday (November 27) while assisting with dinner service at the Los Angeles Mission’s Thanksgiving celebration, Nick spoke up about his efforts to obtain better knowledge of NPD and seek therapy.
“I still don’t understand it all the way, but I kind of always wanted to get tested for it. I did a bunch of tests,” he said.
“I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD. Even as a kid it was dyslexia, but just knowing that I’m just a neurodivergent individual, I kind of always knew.”
“I feel like there’s so many labels out there, but it’s like, to be able to embrace it and say, ‘Look, I’m healing. I need help. Show me.’ I just embrace mental health and therapy in such a strong way. To be able to say I’m an example for others, but also be healing during the self-process works too.” says Nick Cannon
