South Africa’s unemployment rate decreased by 1.4% from 33.5% in the second quarter of 2024 to 32.1% in the third quarter, according to the Labour Force Survey for the third quarter of this year.
In the third quarter, the number of employed individuals rose by 294,000 to 16.9 million, while the number of jobless persons decreased by 373,000 to 8 million, according to Statistics SA’s most recent Quarterly Labour Force survey. South Africa has 5.2 million unemployed persons in 2014.
The formal sector increased by 122 000 in the third quarter and the informal sector employment increased by 165 000 over the same period.
The Director of Labour Statistics, Dihlolelo Phoshoko, said that there was an increase of 294,000 in the number of employed persons in the third quarter.
“There was an increase of 294,000 in the number of employed persons to 16.9 million in the third quarter of 2024, while there was a decrease of 373,000 in the number of unemployed persons to 8 million. This resulted in a decrease of 79 000 (down by 0.3%) in the labour force during the same period.” said Phoshoko,
This Statistics SA graph shows that 16.7 million South Africans were employed in the second quarter, and 16.9 million in the third.
