Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune recently revealed the emotional toll of being released by the club.
Khune shared that he was deeply hurt when informed by Kaizer Chiefs that he was not part of their future plans. “The first couple of weeks after the meeting were incredibly tough,” he admitted. “I spent weeks crying, struggling to comprehend what had happened.”
Despite the club’s respectful approach, Khune had hoped to continue playing until his 40s. “Some mornings I feel ready to return to the field, but the reality of my physical limitations sets in,” he said. “I never thought this day would come.”
In light of this, the Siz The World team shared their thoughts on this revelation and asked listeners, “Did they let go of him too soon or it was time?”
Itumeleng Khune is widely regarded as one of the best in the country’s history. He spent most of his professional career with Kaizer Chiefs, becoming a club icon and a national hero.
The 37-year-old has been instrumental in Kaizer Chiefs’ success over the years, contributing to numerous league titles and cup victories.
Beyond his club career, Khune has also represented South Africa at the international level. He played a crucial role in Bafana Bafana’s campaigns, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
