A tremor hit Roodepoort and Soweto on Tuesday, 24 September with the epicentre in Doornkop.
The 2.4 magnitude tremor struck at approximately 19:35 and was felt predominantly in Roodepoort and Soweto.
Confirmation of the tremor was made by the Council of Geoscience spokesperson, Mahlatse Mononela.
“The preliminary results show that the earthquake registered a local magnitude of approximately 2.5, as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network (SANSN). The epicentre was located west of Soweto, South of Johannesburg.”
Tremors have become a frequent occurrence in past of the West Rand and south of Johannesburg, and in June a magnitude 3 tremor rocked Johannesburg.

There have been no reports of any structural damage or injuries as a result of the tremor in Roodepoort and Soweto.
