Uganda Athletics Federation has confirmed that Olympic runner, Rebecca Cheptegei has died after allegedly being set on fire by her partner.
The 33-year-old who was hospitalised in Kenya was burned on three-quarters of her body when her partner poured petrol on her and set her alight.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.
As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”

The attack on Rebecca Cheptegei occurred on Sunday afternoon at her residence in Kenya’s western Trans Nzoia County, and comes shortly after she competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Cheptegei is a Ugandan cross-country, long-distance and marathon runner who holds the national record in the latter discipline in a non-mixed race.
Police say, Cheptegei’s alleged attacker, her Kenyan partner Dickson Ndiema Marangach, stormed into her home while she was at church.
