A listener shared that her husband recently got injured at work and her mother-in-law notified her as she was listed as his next of kin.
This upset her because she’s been married to her husband for five years. Now she’s questioning her role in his life.
“A few weeks back, my husband got injured at work. I received a call from his mother, who notified me. I immediately called his office and asked HR why they didn’t call me his wife, and I was told that his mother is registered as his next of kin.
“This rubbed me off the wrong way, I have been married to this man for over five years. This just made me question my husband. A few days after he was discharged, I asked him why I was not listed as his next of kin, especially when it comes to emergencies. He told me that it’s not a big deal and that his mom has always been listed as his next of kin and he just never changed it.
“His answer made me uncomfortable but more than anything, it made me wonder about his policies and if he was hiding anything from me. I know some people might say I am overthinking this but knowing that I am not his next of kin at work hurts me. Will I be wrong to insist that he updates this, including his life policies? Or am I going to seem like am in this relationship for the wrong reasons?”
