The M1 and M2 in Braamfontein remain closed as thousands of municipal workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) are staging a protest over pay disputes.
Both major routes have been blockaded with burning debris and vehicles.
An estimated 10 000 SAMWU members are protesting after an attempted engagement with the City’s leadership earlier this morning.
Members have blocked off the M1 in both directions at Smit Street in Braamfontein and in both directions on the M2 in Selby.
This protest is causing major disruptions in traffic with motorists forced to switch off their vehicles or take alternative routes.
Traffic is being diverted at:
- Empire Road on the M1 South
- Booysens Road on the M1 North
- Rissik Street/Selby exit on the M2 West
- Motorists coming from Crown using the M2 East can join the M1 South and exit at Booysens Road.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution or to avoid the routes entirely.
