A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for the murder of 16-year-old Overberg High School learner, Deveney Nel.
The accused who cannot be named as he is a minor, made his first appearance at the Caledon Magistrates Court on Monday, 19 August.
He faces a charge of murder after Deveney’s lifeless body was discovered inside a storeroom of her school on 07 August.
Nel was reported missing by her family after she failed to return home.
The Grade 10 learner was stabbed in her neck and chest and then dragged to the storeroom where she was later found.
Nel was a resident at one of the school’s boarding residences and the school was closed on Thursday, 08 to allow police to investigate.
There was uproar from the community who staged a protest outside the court after the National Prosecuting Authority shared that the accused will be kept in a place of safety while the investigation continues.
Police arrested the minor on Friday, 16 August and Netwerk24 reports that he was acquainted to Deveney Nel since primary school.
The case was postponed to September 18.
