An investigation into claims of racism at the elite Pretoria High School for Girls has ruled in favor of twelve students who were first suspended for making racially charged and microaggressive remarks in a WhatsApp group designated for “whites only.”
The results of a disciplinary hearing at Pretoria High School for Girls, where 12 of the 13 students suspended due to racism-related charges were apparently found not guilty of wrongdoing, have reportedly disappointed the Gauteng Department of Education.
According to department spokesman Steve Mabona:
“As a department, we are quite disappointed about the way in which the school treated us; I mean you would understand that they know this matter has been in the public face and we do not even have an official report on the outcome of their disciplinary processes. So our problem is that why would we not be given a report but we will await for the official report, once we have that, we will then pave a way forward…”
The matter of the thirteenth student, a black girl, has not yet been resolved despite her suspension on Thursday. Some school parents have informed me that eight of the twelve students were demoted as prefects and will now be restored to their leadership positions.
This week was the school’s governing body’s disciplinary hearing day. Parents claimed to have received a notice from the school on Friday informing them of the decision.
