More than a week since 11 children died after their scholar transport vehicle was hit behind by a Ford Ranger, the driver of the bakkie Gert Laurence van Emmens has been released on bail.
Wednesday, 10 July the first day of the third school term, was a tragic day for Rocklands Primary School, and Laerskool Blyvooruitsi.
The driver of the scholar transport vehicle was also killed in the deadly collision after his vehicle toppled over and caught fire.
Four of the children who lost their lives in the tragic collision which happened in Carletonville were from the Hlalele family.
On Thursday, 18 July Emmens made an appearance at the Fochville Magistrates Court to face 12 counts of culpable homicide and a count of reckless and/or negligent driving, alternatively inconsiderate driving.
Emmens was granted bail of R20 000 on schedule 1 offence with conditions that he should hand over his passport to the investigating officer.
He is also not allowed to interfere directly or indirectly with witnesses.
The matter was postponed to 15 October 2024 to allow for further investigations.
A memorial service for the 11 children was held at the Grace Bible Church in Carletonville on Tuesday, 16 July.
