Twelve learners from two Carltonville schools perished in a scholar transport accident. Of the students, eleven attend Rocklands Primary School, and one attends Laerskool Blyvooruitsig. The transport driver perished in the collision as well.
It’s believed that a bakkie struck the scholar transport from behind, causing it to topple over and then catch fire.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Mr Matome Chilonae expressed his disappointment at the fact that the scholar transport was overloaded and said they would be working closely with officials in the area to give the learners a good send-off.
“Earlier this morning, the department received a distressing report from officials indicating that a private scholar transport minibus was involved in a tragic accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, claiming the lives of the 12 learners and their driver. Additionally, 7 other learners have been rushed to a medical facility for urgent medical attention.”
