Gauteng Provinicial Police Commissioner, Tommy Mthombeni says police have been clamping down on spiking incidents after 26 suspects were arrested.
The 26 suspects are linked to vehicle spiking incidents along the N1, N4 and the R80 routes, which are some of the major hotspots.
Apart from increasing police visibility along these hotspot zones in the province, efforts have also been made to ensure motorists have a clear road, with the grass being maintained so drivers can see what is happening around them.
“It is a concerted effort at the end of the day we have to work together so that we can overcome the challenge we are facing.
In the past 5-months our Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) teams assisted over 200 motorists at night with breakdowns including burst tyres, fuel shortages and mechanical failures.
Three spiked vehicles on the N14 Eeufees Road offramp were also assisted.”
Mthombeni said while most spiking incidents occur late at night, there are instances where motorists are targeted during the day.
