Glen Lewis took listeners down memory lane as he reminisced about the road he took to owning his dream car.
While his peers in the industry, the likes of the late radio legend Bob Mabena and others were spending their hard-earned money on cars, Glen Lewis walked to work until he managed to buy a bicycle.
Glen Lewis first met Mabena in 1988 and the two went on to become close friends whilst working at Radio Bob.
Sacrificing everything for about 3-years, the popular radio personality saved his R2 000 car allowance just so he could buy a top of the range Golf GTI.
While hosting breakfast radio, in Mafikeng, Glen Lewis would cycle to work in the rain, on freezing cold winter mornings or sun because he didn’t want his first car to be a standard one. His sacrifices paid off and his first car had everything, from leather seats to a top notch sound system.
The Drive 959 presenter’s story sparked the conversation about the lengths people go to in order to buy something they absolutely love and must have.
Many listeners could relate to Glen’s sacrifice to buy his dream car, but with the option to simply charge their big purchases on their credit card, a previous conversation on Kaya Biz about the psychology of overspending was highlighted.
South Africans are spoilt for choice when it comes to purchasing on credit, with loans from banks, or store cards for groceries, clothing, and other essentials, making it easier for us to buy things on credit and worry about paying it back later.
The same money that South Africans use to pay off short-term debt is where all our potential savings and wealth creation lies.
