A conflicted listener shares that his nephew, who is currently interning, received a life-changing opportunity to go and work abroad. However, he doesn’t have money for Visas, flights, accommodation, etc. His sister has reached out to him for financial assistance.
He and his wife have been saving up to renovate their home, so he’s thinking about using that money. But he’s worried his wife won’t be too happy about it. To make matters worse, his wife and sister aren’t exactly best buddies.
Reaching out to fellow Best T in the City listeners, he wants to know if there could be any blind spots he could be missing.
“My nephew received a perfect opportunity to work in the UAE. He must leave at the end of July to start work in August.
My sister doesn’t work and so as his uncle, he asked me to assist him financially with tickets, visas, some clothing, and pocket money until he gets paid. He has been an intern, so he wasn’t earning much and doesn’t have savings.
Here is the issue, I have been putting money away to renovate our house in the coming months and now I am torn between making my wife happy or seeing to it my nephew doesn’t miss out on this opportunity.
My wife and sister don’t have the best relationship and when I told her about my nephew’s news, she was happy for him but didn’t engage me much. The house renovations are not something that needs to happen ASAP, if anything we can wait however will my wife understand? I know this is a good opportunity for my nephew and should he go then I know he will take care of my sister and his siblings.
Deep down I just want to give the funds to my nephew, but I also don’t want problems at home. How best can I approach this with my wife?
