“We have to increase the quality and quantity of the middle-class” – COPE’s Thomas Mofokeng on the economy.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Congress of the People (COPE) Gauteng Chairperson, Thomas Mofokeng who outlined the COPE’s manifesto.
In the general elections scheduled for May, the Congress of the People asserts that it will gain more seats in Parliament and make gains throughout the nation. COPE’s manifesto was unveiled in Hammanskraal, the epicenter of the cholera outbreak from the previous year, by President Mosiuoa Lekota.
COPE’s Thomas Mofokeng advocated for the middle class saying that if there isn’t a serious investment in that segment of the population, the country will fail. He said the country’s tax base is predominantly with the middle class and aiding their growth will be beneficial for all of society.
“These are the people that are very important, let me tell you why. These are the people that are worried when there is no medication in the hospital, these are the people that are worried when their children don’t get good education, they stand up and go and address that issue. If we neglect them and never invest in them, we will never have people that will start the SMMEs, when they start the SMMEs they pull the poor to help them have a stake in the economy.”
