“Akujolwa emsebenzini” – Dr. Mamokgethi Phakeng’s advice to young people about office romance.
Dr. Mamokgethi Phakeng has encouraged young people to stay very far away from having romantic relationships at work.
Yes, we all spend a significant amount of our lives in the office and we tend to get very familiar with our co-workers, however, entertaining a romantic relationship with co-workers can be very tricky.
In certain companies dating co-workers is strictly forbidden, while others can demand that staff members sign a document attesting to the consensual nature of their relationship.
Since relationships between coworkers in various power levels are more likely to result in sexual harassment and favoritism, they will probably be scrutinized more closely. Relationships with co-workers could cause conflict in the workplace, which could jeopardize work quality and result in complaints to HR.
Dr. Mamokgethi Phakeng took to social media to share some wisdom with young people about office relationships and said there must be a thick line between work and personal life.
“Here is a piece of advice for Tuesday: never entertain the idea of having a lover at work. Office romance is out of equation. It will make you miserable at work. Keep a thick line between work and personal life. Ungajoli emsebenzini! Akujolwa emsebenzini. Fullstop.”
