Imagine coming home late at night to find a hippo, that’s right a hippo wandering around the streets of your suburb.
That’s what some Grassy Park, Cape Town residents were faced with over the weekend, when a hippo was spotted on the streets after escaping from the nearby Nature Reserve.
While rangers from the Rondevlei Nature Reserve eventually guided the male baby hippo back home, it was a sight for some residents who thought they were seeing things.
The hippo reportedly escaped due to a broken fence, which was mended temporarily to prevent any other wildlife from leaving the confines of the reserve.
Hippos are ranked as one of the Top 10 most dangerous animals in the world, killing 500 humans a year.
Their sharp, almost half a metre canines can cut a human in half with just one bite.
Hippos are also extremely territorial and are known to tip over boats, cars and attack if a human approaches.
Thankfully no one was hurt during this escaped hippo’s ventures.
