The North West Department of Education (DOE) has given an update on the Hopetown bus accident that took place on Sunday, 07 April.
No fatalities have been reported in the accident, after a bus carrying 37 learners and two teachers overturned whilst en-route to Kimberley from Hopetown.
On Monday, 08 April, the DOE said while there were no fatalities and that none of the learners were injured, one teacher remains hospitalised in Kimberly due to serious injuries sustained in the accident.
MEC for Education in the North West province, Viola Motsumi said all on board the bus were taken to a medical facility for examinations as a precautionary measure.
“As a continuation of our commitment to supporting those impacted, the psychosocial team will continue to offer sessions to both the families of the learners and the teachers involved. It is imperative that we provide ongoing care and assistance during this challenging time.
During times of adversity, it is crucial that we come together to provide unwavering support to those affected. Our priority is the well-being and recovery of the learners, the teachers who are both recovering at home and in hospital as well their families.
We are committed to offering the necessary resources and assistance to help them navigate through this difficult period. Our hearts go out to the injured teacher, and we wish them a speedy and full recovery. Together, as a community, we will overcome this challenge.”
