Katlego Sekhu

Limpopo-born rapper Shebeshxt, real name Katlego Chauke, is one of 2023’s biggest breakout artists. This past holiday season, Shebe was in high demand and one of the most sought-after performers in South Africa.
Despite his recent fame and success, Shebe still lives like any normal person. He drives himself to gigs and doesn’t have security or bodyguards.
Recently speaking to rapper turned podcaster L Tido, Shebe explained why he doesn’t have any security with him despite being one of the most sought-after artists right now.
He told L-Tido that having personal security won’t guarantee his safety, as he believes they will always serve the highest bidder.
“The guys that I am with are my bodyguards. Where I come from, we live with loyalty because love fades. A bodyguard is someone that I don’t know personally, but they probably know who I am. For example, if I am paying him R10,000 every week and someone offers him more than that for my life, don’t you think he’ll betray me?”
He pointed out that he’d rather stick with his friends, as they know where his journey began and that they share everything, whether it is big or small. “My friends have struggled with me, and we share the little that we have. That is the life that I live. We all know where we are coming from and are fighting the same battle.”
Earlier this year, Shebeshxt gave thanks to God after surviving a car crash that left his VW GTI in ruins. He walked away from the accident scar-free.
The crash came just weeks after he asked for prayers, as he feared that people had hired hitmen to assassinate him. In addition to this, a sangoma sent Shebeshxt a warning to watch his back at the start of the year.
The traditional healer, Mkhulu Qheba, told Shebeshxt to be careful of people in the industry, and when he is offered something, especially to drink, to reject it, because somebody close to him is spiking his drinks.
