Joburg EMS are on high alert as concern of a Level 2 warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms grows.
This comes after the Western Cape was issued with a severe Level 9 weather warning on Monday, 08 April of extremely heavy downpours and strong winds.
Following a weekend of destruction after gale-force winds swept through the Western Cape, Gauteng has experienced heavy rains from Sunday night, 07 April.
On Monday, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 2 warning for Gauteng, and the City of Joburg has emergency teams on standby as thunderstorms are expected to cause flash floods in most parts of Johannesburg and surrounding areas.
“City of Joburg EMS Aquatic Rescue Unit which is a Specialized Unit which responds to water related Emergencies remains on high alert monitoring all 7 regions of the City of Joburg.
Residents are urged to avoid crossing river streams when conducting daily activities, monitor young children to stay away from river streams/drainage systems, motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving and extend safe following distances when driving.
It is advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges.”
Disaster Management monitoring teams have been dispatched in all 7 regions of the City of Johannesburg to monitor the situation/to assist and facilitate relief to residents who might be affected by this severe thunderstorms overnight.
