Local authorities said on Sunday that an overcrowded ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique, killing over ninety people
About 130 passengers were on the modified fishing boat when it encountered difficulties trying to get to an island off the coast of Nampula province, according to officials.
According to reports the rescue mission was challenging because of the sea conditions, but rescuers had located five survivors and were still looking for others.
The majority of travelers were attempting to flee the mainland due to fear brought on by false information about cholera.
Nampula province’s secretary of state Jaime Neto said “the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers it ended up sinking … There are 91 people who lost their lives,”
