The Gauteng Department of Education (DOE) has confirmed the senseless killings of two teachers on Friday, 05 April.
In separate incidents a Life Orientation teacher from Riverside High School in Vanderbiljpark, and a Departmental Head of Commerce at Unity Secondary School in Daveyton were both shot and killed.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents, however information received thus far reveal the Riverside High School teacher was driving to work on Friday morning when she was shot by an unknown assailant at a traffic light near the North West University’s Vaal campus.
The 33-year old teacher has been identified as Palesa Mofokeng who sustained multiple bullet wounds and was declared dead on scene by paramedics.
Four men, including her ex-husband who is a medical doctor have been arrested in connection with her brutal murder.
Meanwhile the Departmental Head from Unity Secondary was also shot inside his car in Daveyton.
Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane expressed concern at the senseless killings of teachers in the province and call on law enforcement to bring the culprits of these crimes to book.
“We are deeply concerned at the onslaught of our educators following the deaths of two educators which occurred on the same day and involved shootings. We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to their respective families and school communities, while pleading law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits of these senseless killings to book.”
