ANALYSIS: ANC & MK Party square off in Electoral Court.
The African National Congress and newly formed party Mkhonto weSizwe were budding heads at the Bloemfontein Electoral Court on Tuesday.
The ruling party wanted the court to prevent MK Leader and former President Jacob Zuma from using the name as it is the name of the MK Veterans’ Association registered by the ANC for its veterans.
Additionally, it requests that the party’s registration be revoked by the South African Electoral Commission for utilizing a name connected to the ruling party. Mkhonto weSizwe (MK) may be deregistered and unable to run in the May 29 national elections if the ANC wins the lawsuit.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Mkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela, as well as African National Congress Head of Elections Mdumiseni Ntuli.

“The MK military wing was disbanded” – argues MK Party spokesperson
“The MK military wing was disbanded in 1993, the MKVA was disbanded by the Cyril Ramaphosa-led government. The MKVA was for military veterans, that alone shows you the attitude shown to people who fought for our liberation. What we find strange is that upon President Zuma’s announcement that he would be voting and campaigning for Mkhonto we Sizwe, the ANC wakes up from a slumber, to now lodge cases against Mkhonto we Sizwe. We have been working underground for the last 3 years.”

“Mkhonto we Sizwe is appropriating our symbols as the ANC” – argues the ANC Head of Elections.
“The best appropriate settlement on this matter is for them to start their new journey, defining themselves as a new entity in our country, and without appropriating any of our heritage and symbols as the African National Congress. When they do so, it is not only about promoting their own self-serving agenda, but to equally undermine the standing of the ANC”
