Residents from Alex have been urged to reduce water usage due to the Sandton 1 and 2 meters being under strain.
Alex has been identified as the highest water consumer within the Sandton 1 and 2 meters supply zone, and the 2 meters are counted as one of the top 10 highest consuming meters in Johannesburg.
Despite Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda saying there is no water crisis, the Daily Maverick reports that 50% of the City is affected by water supply issues which have persisted for over 2-weeks.
This after the Eikenhof pump station was hit by lightning on 02 March and meant repairs needed to be conducted after a feederboard issue.
Following the repairs, residents in almost half of the city were without water for 2-weeks and just as the situation eased on Friday, 15 March, residents were notified that a second lightning strike on the pump station on Monday, 18 March impacted pumping at the station yet again.
Frustrated JHB residents in Roodepoort also experienced a water outage on Saturday, 16 March because the Waterval tower had reportedly run dry.
While Gwamanda may believe there isn’t a water crisis, JHB Water has called on Alexandra residents to cut back on water consumption to ensure equitable distribution to the system.
Sandton 1 and 2 supplies Linbro Park, Marlboro, Morningside, Bryanston and Illovo.
