Mzansi Magic has announced that production has officially started on their new prime-time drama, Queen Modjadji. This epic tale is inspired by the legendary rainmaker of the Balobedu, the first Queen Modjadji, whose family has been ruling the Lobedu clan in Southern Africa for generations.
Born into royalty and gifted with an ancestral power over the elements, Queen Modjadji’s reign led to a line of powerful queens. Their ability to control the weather and bring rain has made the Balobedu dynasty one of the most respected in Africa.
The script and cast for the series are almost finalized, and filming will begin soon. Leading the production is the talented poet, playwright, and producer, Duma Ndlovu. He aims to create a show that immerses viewers in the culture and traditions of the Lobedu people.
According to Ndlovu, the series will delve into the connection between the earth, elements, and human energy – both physical and spiritual.
“The earth, the elements, and the energy of humans connect in ways that are both physical and spiritual, both obvious and unseen. Queen Modjadji was a living embodiment of this, and so we will explore what this Royal title, and the women who’ve held it, have lived, sacrificed, lost, and achieved. And, at the same time, we want to be very entertaining – with a strong episodic storyline and historical detail set under unpredictable skies, where rain or storm, echoes what is happening in the lives of those below”, says Ndlovu.
