445 seats to be contested in provincial legislatures across the country, says IEC.
Subject to the Western Cape seats being finalized, a total of 445 seats in provincial legislatures will be up for contest.
As the 2024 National and Provincial Elections (NPE) approaches, The Electoral Commission released the provincial legislature seat determination on Friday.
Every province has its own legislature, made up of between 30 and 80 members, in line with the Constitution. A province’s executive council is made up of the premier and several other executive council members.

The President appoints Premiers as with the national Cabinet, decisions are made by consensus.
“The seats are determined in accordance with Section 105(2) of the Republic of South Africa’s Constitution Act 108 of 1996 and item 3(1) of Schedule 3 to the Electoral Act No.73 of 1998.
The provincial legislatures’ seats determination takes into account scientifically based data on the population in each province, as well as representation by interested parties.”
