SANRAL says the 6.25% increase in toll tariffs published in the Government Gazette last week, due to take effect on March 1, was much lower than 2023’s adjustment due to SA’s weak economic climate.
In light of this, 959 Breakfast invited Layton Beard, the spokesperson of the Automobile Association of South Africa, to speak about the latest increase in toll tariffs.
Beard highlighted that the problem lies in the fact that those alternative routes would typically be managed by local authorities.
“What you find is that the budgets of those local authorities are already stretched. As a result, much of the maintenance that should go into those alternative routes is not being carried out effectively. The increase by SANRAL doesn’t come as a shock, as it is something that happens every year. These increases are not unexpected,” he explained in part.
