A second learner has died in the Eastern Cape following a scholar transport crash between a minibus and a cargo train.
The driver of the scholar transport died instantly, while a 15-year old learner passed away after being airlifted to a hospital in Gqeberha.
Twenty other learners sustained injuries in the crash which occurred on 01 February whilst the scholar transport driver was trying to pass through the railway crossing which is the only way into Nomathamsanqa Informal Settlement.
In an update by the HeraldLIVE, it has been confirmed that a second learner had succumbed to injuries whilst at the Livingstone Hospital undergoing treatment.
Five other learners are said to still be receiving medical care at the facility.
Police are said to be investigating a case of culpable homicide.

In a separate incident closer to home, a Grade 6 learner in Ga-Rankuwa was killed after reportedly falling out of the scholar transport he was travelling in.
The learner was run over by the rear wheels of the vehicle and was killed.
Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane called on drivers to be more vigilant when transporting learners.
“Indeed, this is terribly saddening news. Scholar Transport is an iniative that form part of our critical interventions to alleviate pressure from parents.
As such, we expect our learners to be safely transported from home to school and back home.
We call upon drivers to be extra vigilant for learners’ safety. We wish to convey our deepest condolences to the family and school community.”
