“ID book, T-shirts, hearing aid, prison keys” – Mandela’s items to go on auction for millions.
It’s official, the public has an opportunity to buy significant items belonging to Former South African President Nelson Mandela.
After a two-year legal battle, Nelson Mandela’s eldest daughter plans to auction off the former president’s personal belongings next month.
The South African government had attempted to stop the sale, claiming the items were pieces of national heritage.
There are over 70 items up for grabs, with starting prices exceeding millions of rands. These include a number of his vibrant “Madiba” t-shirts, his hearing aids, his bible, key to his prison cell in Robben Island where he spent 27 years.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center, in New York City will be giving a preview of the items before the online auction takes place.
In other related news, The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, the museum that oversees the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for a long time, and the South African Heritage Resources Agency joined forces to request permission, the agency said on Thursday, even though it respects the court’s ruling.
“SAHRA, the Department and the Museum are urgently assessing the lawfulness and implications of the impending auction, and considering all available remedies,” the agency said in its statement. “
Kaya Drive with Thomas and Skhumba spoke about Mandela’s items and asked Kaya 959 listeners to share items that they have at their disposal that they would sell if things had gone south.
