Born into a family rooted in both South African and Mozambican musical heritage, Thakzin has risen as a globally acknowledged and versatile producer within the music scene. His forward-thinking approach, distinct sound, and knack for blending genres not only showcase his musical prowess but also drive the evolution of African electronic music on a global scale. Recently, Thakzin sat down for an exclusive conversation on My Top 10 at 10 with Tbose.
Reflecting on his passion for music, he attributes it to his father’s influence.
“My father used to be a pianist and a drummer. He used to ask me to play music whenever they had stockvels. We’d practice during the week. He was training me to have that musical ear and to know how to please people musically.
“He also bought us the keyboard and taught us how to play. We learned a lot from him. From then on, it was like my dad loved music, but now it is all starting to make sense.”
In the early stages of his career, Thakzin struggled to resonate with the South African audience.
“I would go to clubs and I would listen to Amapiano; I would listen to what really moves people. I asked myself, How do I connect to the roots of African music? Three-step is, for me, the bridge between an African sound and incorporating what is happening in the rest of the world.”
Going into the new year, Thakzin plans to drop a full album.
