The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a severe weather warning across South Africa, with particular focus on Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
Widespread heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected over Johannesburg, Pretoria, Polokwane, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay, Umtata, Bloemfontein and East London.
“Weather alert: Severe thunderstorms are expected over the eastern areas.
Cloudy and cool in the east, with widespread to scattered showers, and thundershowers expected from the afternoon.
Otherwise partly cloudy and warm.”
An 80% probability of rain and temperatures dropping to just 19º in Johannesburg have led to a Level 2 weather warning being issued for the northeastern parts of the country.
Severe thunderstorms leading to gusty winds, small hail and heavy downpours are expected on Monday, 11 December.
Conditions are expected to clear by Tuesday and Wednesday, with scattered showers in some parts of the south and east coast, and parts of Gauteng.
This comes after the SAWS issued a warning for heavy rains and possible flooding in these parts over the weekend.
