Workers at Gold One Modder East Mine in Springs are staging another sit-in, after 52 miners were allegedly dismissed following disciplinary hearings against workers over the previous “hostage” situation at the mine in October.
Reportedly more than 350 miners are holed up underground and are refusing to emerge to the surface.
The entrance to the mine is locked, and morning shift employees are unable to enter the mine.
This follows the death of a senior official at the mine earlier this week, who was gunned down amid the disciplinary hearings against miners who allegedly kidnapped 500 of their coworkers underground in a three-day hostage situation.
It is unclear at this stage if the situation is a sit-in or hostage situation.
On Wednesday, 25 October, several workers remained underground for 3 days, over a stand-off between worker unions, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) over the representation of workers.
AMCU said the situation in October was from its members who demanded that the union be recognized as the majority representation.
Three days after the incident, all 543 mineworkers who were forced underground by their colleagues emerged, ending the hostage crisis at gold miner Gold One, the first time.
