City Power has abandoned plans to disconnect government hospitals in Johannesburg due to unsettled debt amounting to millions.
This after the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) said there were various discrepancies with City Power’s billing for six facilities in the province.
On Thursday, 30 November City Power called off its plans to disconnect Charlotte Maxeke Hospital over a R40 million unpaid bill, which was disputed by the GDoH.
The GDoH said there were 6 invoices attributed to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, for which a total of R32 474 056.39 was paid from April to September.
This amount was regarding the R40 million debt for Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, for which an additional R4.9 million had been finalised for payment this week.
The last invoice, which is for the amount of R5.2 million, is according to the department currently being processed for a purchase order to be created before the payment is released.
City Power was called out for its incorrect billing system and for not responding to the GDoH over various discrepancies in its invoices for the six facilities which included, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, South Rand, Chris Hani Baragwanath and Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
A meeting with City Power’s CEO and Chairperson and MECs took place on Thursday to discuss the matter, and as a result the disconnections of hospitals was called off.
City Power claims provincial and National government owes over R500 million.
