“It was truly an honour” – Trevor Noah receives the 2023 Erasmus Prize worth R3 million.
The Dutch Erasmus Prize for 2023 has officially been awarded to Trevor Noah. The former Daily Show host is not only the youngest but also the second comedian to win the prize.
The 39-year-old was personally given the award by King Willem-Alexander at a glamorous ceremony held at the Royal Palace Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
The Erasmus Prize includes a R3 million cash award as well as a folded ribbon decoration with a titanium plate on both ends.
Noah posted on Instagram about how honored he is to receive such a prize.
“Thank you for the warm welcome Netherlands! 🇳🇱 It was truly an honour to be awarded the 2023 Erasmus Prize!! 🙏🏽 Special thanks to the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation, His Majesty the King Willem-Alexander, & The Royal Family. Humberto Tan, for the delightful conversation and lastly, everyone that attended last night in Amsterdam!!”
Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony Noah said:
“It is truly an honour to be standing here as a recipent of this prestigous award. To be honest it is really unbelievable, mostly because I never thought there could be anything that could bring me to Amsterdam in the winter. Also because, when I began my comedy career, I never could have dreamed that a small stage in Johannesburg would become the first piece of a puzzle connecting me with people worldwide. Whether you’re from Amsterdam or Johannesburg, we all journey through life’s complexities together.”
