Durban-born singer Holly Rey says living with diabetes is a rollercoaster ride.
The Scared To Love You hitmaker shared that she’d been feeling really sick lately and is recovering from an ear infection, which is only aggravating her diabetes.
Holly’s ear infection has resulted in her losing her hearing temporarily, which she’s hoping will return once the infection is cleared up.
However, the problem is that the infection is affecting Holly’s glucose levels which is either dropping too low, or rising too rapidly.
The singer has been living with diabetes from the age of 11-years, and suffers with Type 1 diabetes, which is insulin-dependent.
Being sick means that Holly’s glucose spikes occur all the time, as her body is trying to beat the infection.
Holly Rey opened up about her struggles with diabetes hoping it would help people understand what the condition entails, saying she’s currently experiencing “diabetic fatigue” because she’s sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.
“I’ve really been struggling with my diabetes, if you’re diabetic you’ll know that any infection you have in your body pushes your sugar up because your body is just trying to fight off the infection.
So, I’ve really been feeling horrible all round.
The problem is when you have this infection, you’re not on a lot of insulin because you have to help your body fight the infection, and sometimes you miscalculate having lows, and then it spikes and goes up and down.
It’s just like a rollercoaster ride, that feels horrible. The thing about diabetes is that it’s constant, it’s all the time.
Everything is affecting your glucose all the time, and making you feel horrible.
It’s something that a lot of people who don’t have diabetes, don’t understand. It’s not just about what you eat, everyone thinks it’s about eating sugar, no, it’s everything.”
