On Thursday afternoon, the National Assembly agreed to recommend Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka as the new Public Protector.
“Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka is recommended for appointment as the Public Protector,” speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said after Gcaleka received 244 yes votes and 12 no votes.
Gcaleka has been acting in the position of Public Protector since 2022, following the suspension and later suspension of former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
In light of this, Legal Expert Mpumelelo Zikalala joined Sizwe Dhlomo to reflect on this development, highlighting how Gcaleka can navigate this position considering how politicised the office of the Public Protector has been over the years.
Earlier this week, former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane, announced that she had joined the Economic Freedom Fighters.
Mkhwebane said the red berets were her first political home and clarified that she was never part of the African National Congress (ANC).
“I could relate to the EFF. As Public Protector, I said I would protect the poor and marginalised, so with the EFF, I can continue to do that.
“I am not joining the EFF for positions. I was dealt with harshly by the ANC and DA, and at the end of the day, I could stand this treatment to expose them for not being there for the poor and marginalised,” said Mkhwebane.
