South African comedian Nina Hastie recently had a double reason to celebrate her birthday. It not only marked another year of her life but also a remarkable 10 years of her journey towards sobriety.
Nina took to social media to express her overwhelming gratitude for being alive and surrounded by people who genuinely care about her.
“I’m just really grateful to be alive. I’m grateful to so many people who have contributed to my sober life—people who helped me even when I was still inactive.
“I have so many people whose houses I slept at and couches I slept on, and so many people who were so very kind to me along the way and in my sober journey who have supported me, given me opportunities, and believed in me,” she said.

In 2021, Nina Hastie opened up to Kaya 959 about her journey with depression. She revealed that her motivation to share her journey publicly was to destigmatize mental health and teach everyone to understand what depression is and how to support people living with depression.
“I feel like people don’t understand what it is, and it is easy for them to be unkind. It is a fatal condition that can lead to someone taking their own life if not appropriately treated. This is very serious, said the comedian.
