Gauteng municipalities owe the power utility Eskom R4.7 billion.
Power utility Eskom announced on Wednesday that Gauteng’s municipal electricity debt continues to grow at an alarming rate.
In 2022, Eskom incurred a net loss of R12.3 billion after-tax despite the power utility’s operating profit improving by 238% to R20.4 billion.
According to Eskom, The City of Tshwane and the City of Ekurhuleni jointly owe Eskom R4.7 billion as of August 31, 2023.
Tshwane has accrued a debt of over R3.2 billion due to inconsistent payments in July and August 2023, while Ekurhuleni’s debt is currently just under R1.5 billion, according to the state-owned power utility.
“The payment patterns by both municipalities have deteriorated to concerning levels that further threaten Eskom’s liquidity, financial performance, and sustainability.
“The erratic payments by the City of Tshwane dating back to 2022 are alarming. Also of serious concern is the entrenched practice by the City of Ekurhuleni of settling its account late over the past six months,” said Eskom in a statement.
