Trevor Noah recently made headlines locally after it was reported that the comedian would be paid R33 million from the private sector to promote South Africa.
During a recent interview with 702, Trevor took the opportunity to set the record straight about the rumours surrounding his supposed R33 million deal.
“I wish I had all the money that newspapers and tabloids say I have,” he chuckled. “Sometimes I read newspapers, and I’m like, I also want that money.”
Trevor clarified that the reports were completely false. He explained that he is not involved with SA Tourism but rather with a private organization that represents hotels and Airbnb accommodations.
The former host of The Daily Show highlighted that since coming out of COVID, South Africa has had the “lowest rebound rate of any nation in the world that needs tourism as a big part of its GDP.”
Moreover, Trevor acknowledged that South Africans are “so traumatized by corruption on every corner” that everyone thinks everything is connected to corruption in some way.
He added, “We cannot afford to not have tourists in this country, and so when you look at other countries that have bounced back to their previous capacity before COVID, South Africa is sitting at, like, 50–60%. That is terrible for us. It affects our economy in a big way.”
