The Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality has been criticized for instructing employees to wear black on Thursday, 14 September to mourn Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
A memorandum from the municipality to staff which was shared to social media on Tuesday, 12 September, received a number of irate responses, with some against being forced to dress accordingly.
The memo which was issued by Municipal Manager SB Mthembu, was sent to various departments within the Inkatha Freedom Party-led (IFP) district.
All employees, male and female were instructed to wear black, and women are expected to wear a doek as well as black clothing.
“Please be informed that due to the death of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Municipality will observe Thursday, 14 September as a day of bereavement.
In lieu of this, all employees (male and female) must use black clothing.
Female employees must use a doek with their black clothing.
Kindly inform all employees in your departments.”
As reported by IOL, Mthembu doesn’t agree that employees were instructed to follow through with the below request, and says they were merely informed.
However, making use of the words, “all employees must use”, were taken to mean that employees had no choice and were ordered to adhere to the memorandum.
Comments on social media were not in favour of the memorandum, and some responded that they would simply not comply.

A memorial service for Prince Buthelezi is set to take place on Wednesday, 13 September in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal.
Daily prayer services will be held until the funeral which will take place at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Regional Stadium in Ulundi at 09h00 on Saturday.
Buthelezi died on Saturday morning, 09 September at his home in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, just a few days after being discharged from after a lengthy hospital stay.
His passing comes just two weeks after his 95th birthday, and tribute messages have been pouring in from many political leaders.
Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi will be laid to rest on Saturday, 16 September and not on Friday as was initially communicated.
The Traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu Monarch, and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) will receive a Special Official Funeral Category One.
