A Benoni mom lost her arm when her family dog attacked her and her 11-year-old son.
Linda and Brayden Venter spent several days in hospital being treated for severe injuries sustained during the attack.
On 29 August, the Venter’s family dog Zeus, viciously attacked Brayden before turning on Linda.
As reported by Benoni City Times, Linda was hanging up washing, while her son was playing rugby in their front garden prior to their dog attacking them.
Brayden suffered bites to his face, arm, leg, and buttock, and was discharged from hospital after a week.
The 37-year-old mom of three sustained injuries to her face, arm, abdomen, and leg, and was in an induced coma for 6-days at the Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton.
Linda was reportedly attacked after she intervened when she saw Zeus attacking her son.
The extent of her injuries meant Linda had to be airlifted to the hospital where she underwent the first of her reconstructive surgeries, after having her arm amputated.
The family’s story was shared by Linda’s brother-in-law Philip Stoneman, who said they were relieved that both Linda and Brayden will make a full recovery.
Stoneman set up a Back-A-Buddy page to help alleviate the added financial burden of medical costs, physical and psychological rehabilitation, and the expected loss of income that the family will experience as they rebuild their lives.
According to Stoneman, the family’s dog is a mix between a Great Dane and a Bullterrier.
The animal was euthanised by the Benoni SPCA who arrived on the scene to find the dog still displaying aggressive behaviour.
