Commission of Inquiry to investigate Joburg fire to be led by Justice Sisi Khampepe.
A commission of inquiry, headed by Justice Sisi Khampepe, has been established by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to look into the Usindiso Building fire in Johannesburg, which killed at least 76 lives and left dozens more hurt and homeless.
Vuyelwa Mathilda Mabena and Advocate Thulani Makhubela will join Justice Khampepe on the commission. The commission’s terms of reference should be published soon, and the Premier will receive a report as a result.

Lesufi pleaded with the impacted citizens to come forward and support the commission’s investigation.
“The commission will investigate the prevalence of hijacked buildings in Johannesburg, what caused the deadly blaze in Marshalltown, and who must shoulder total responsibility for this tragedy.
“In Johannesburg, the issue of stolen buildings is becoming a crisis, necessitating drastic action. A thorough intervention is required to ensure that disasters like the Marshalltown fire, one of the deadliest in recent memory, never happen again,” Lesufi said.
