The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has launched its partnership with an alcohol manufacturer and the National Liquor Traders Council at the Kempton Taxi Rank.
The parties will collaborate on road safety as well as efforts to educate passengers on Covid-19. This is all part of SANTACO’s Easter weekend road safety campaign launch.
Bafana Magagula, SANTACO Strategic Operations Manager spoke to Kaya Breakfast to talk about this partnership and what it aims to achieve.
“We’ve joined forces in our Hlokomela program, this is not only a once-off thing, this is a partnership that we will be doing for years going forward.”
Protecting pedestrians
The road safety campaign will be focused on ensuring pedestrians are protected during this period.
“We are studying road safety every day and our studies brought to our attention that the deaths of pedestrians are increasing yearly when we checked through statistics, we discovered that every time a pedestrian is knocked down there are cases of them being drunk. We said that we can’t just be concentrating on taxis ignoring the statistics of pedestrians that are incapacitated.”

COVID-19 protocols in public transport
Magagula spoke about how during this period, there will be a very strict monitoring of taxis that are not abiding by COVID-19 protocols and those that are putting passengers’ lives at risk through overloading.
“Taxis that are travelling inter-provincially know that they need to load not more than 70% capacity, all traffic officers are aware of this. If they just look and observe and do nothing about it, they are as guilty as those drivers who commit this offence. “
